5 Easy Things That Will Make You More Successful
Sadly, the business world today is filled with mediocre employees. This is due in part to companies not engaging their employees, but that is another article for another day. Instead, I want to focus on 5 easy things that will make you more successful on the job.
Smiling sounds easy, but look around the cube farm at work. How often do you see people smile? A smile can defuse tense situations, evoke happiness in yourself, and even make someone smile back thereby making someone else happier too. Being positive can be contagious, so smile.
#2 Take responsibility
Hopefully you have a sponsor that will provide ground cover allowing you to try different things. After all, failure is part of innovation. Unless there is a pattern, a good leader will not see an employee’s failure as a negative thing. Instead you will be praised for thinking outside the box. However, this is not always the case.
If you do make a mistake, own up to it. Take responsibility. This does not mean that you cannot explain why you tried something. This means that you will state, “Yes this failed, I will learn from it, and I will make modifications in the future.” By taking responsibility you win the respect of your management staff as well as your coworkers and direct reports.
#3 Be polite
I was raised in the south. Being nice and kind is part of the culture. It is amazing how you build relationships just by offering to help someone. Volunteering your time, expertise, or guidance to someone else will be rewarded tenfold. Just because you are the boss, doesn’t mean you have to be “bossy.”
#4 Have a plan and implement it
It is amazing to me how time flies as you get older. If you do not stop to take stock and develop a plan, you could find yourself adrift in the sea mundane tasks. Think about how much time you waste on checking emails. You can work a lot of hours, but are you truly productive? If you don’t have a plan in place, you might not be. Develop a plan and make it happen.
#5 Do the right thing
This should be easy. However based on the number of ethics classes and companies caught in scandals due to lack of integrity, I think it is often overlooked. If you say you are going to do something, do it. If something feels slimy, gives you pause, or you get that feeling in your gut that is probably intuition telling you that is probably is not the right thing to do. Therefore, just don’t do it. Instead, trust your values and principles. Treat people (employees and clients) as important because they are.
If you implement these five things you will make more money, earn the respect of your colleagues, and become known as the go-to person on your team!
I’d love to know what you think. Are these 5 easy things to make you more successful really difficult to do? Do you think having a ready smile when a team-mate arrives in your office might brighten their day? Is doing the right think really all that difficult? Feel free to leave me a comment in the section below!
